Set during the Civil War, the drama follows the true story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy: banding together with other small farmers and with the assistance of local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. His marriage to a former slave, Rachel, and his subsequent establishment of a mixed race community was unique in the post-war South. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is playing his mixed race wife Rachel and Mahershala Ali is playing a runaway slave named Moses Washington. I can honestly say this is one of the first movies centered around a Confederate solider that I am actually looking forward to.

Here’s the English language trailer for Omar Sy’s next film, “Chocolat,” in which the French actor plays a former Cuban-born slave Rafael Padilla who became a circus entertainer in France during the late 1800s. After the trailer, read Tambay’s previous updates on the upcoming film, including a summary of the story at Shadow and Act . This trailer caught my attention! What do you think of the trailer?
