Black in Period Films

Some sad news for Princess Tiana fans!! Walt Disney Animation Studios has pulled the plug on their much anticipated ‘Tiana’ series and will no longer be creating original longform streaming content. According to The Hollywood Reporter “sources close to the streaming series say that despite best efforts, including several changes to the creative team, Tiana ultimately could not get to where it needed to be given production costs.” Whatever the reason, I am very disappointed at the series' cancellation. I had been keeping a close eye on the project and was very excited to support it on Disney+. Disney first announced that Princess Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose) from 2009 film The Princess and the Frog, will be getting her own series on Disney+ in December of 2020. This is the first image that I have seen from the Roots Reboot. With talents like Laurence Fishburne (as Alex Haley) and Anika Noni Rose (as Kizzy) the final result can't be too bad. I trust the casted actors and actresses to give amazing performances. I am just worried about the pressure that comes with adding to a classic with such a legacy. I don't want to be underwhelmed when I'm done watching. I like the coloring of the picture. Another thing that makes me happy about this picture is Anika Noni Rose and her hair. Her natural hair looks so great. I hate period films that refuse to actually style kinky Black hair. Contrary to popular belief ... first hand slave narratives and runaway slave advertisements actually prove enslaved Black women (and men) cared about their appearance and took time to style their hair. I can go on and on about this topic so I'll stop here and save some for another time. What do you think about this image?

May 16 is the U.S release date for the film Half of A Yellow Sun. Click here for the exciting trailer. I haven't read the novel (by the wonderful Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie) that this film is based on. However even without reading the novel this trailer is enough to get me excited about the film. The cast includes heavy weights like Chiwetel Ejiofor; who seems to be becoming quite the Black Period Film mainstay huh? Anika Noni Rose. And Thandie Newton who has been on this blog twice before .
